Agentic commerce is online shopping in which an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, finds, compares and sometimes buys products on the customer's behalf, without the customer visiting your store themselves.

How agentic commerce works

A customer asks an AI assistant for, say, "a waterproof hiking jacket under €200, delivered by Friday". The assistant searches product catalogues, compares price, reviews and delivery time, and shows a few options. In more and more assistants, the customer can also check out inside the conversation. The store supplies the data and processes the order, but the customer may never see your homepage.

What Shopify is building

In January 2026, Shopify and Google introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): an open standard that lets AI agents talk to any store and complete transactions. Shopify manages AI channels centrally in the admin through Agentic Storefronts, with integrations for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode and Gemini. For now, these channels are rolling out mainly to US shoppers. European rollout is expected, but there is no fixed timing yet.

What it means for your store
