Transaction fees

Also known as payment processing fees, transaction costs, processing fees

Transaction fees are the costs you pay per payment to your payment provider, and sometimes to your e-commerce platform as well.

By Arthur Lauwers

Transaction fees are the costs you pay per payment to your payment provider, and sometimes to your e-commerce platform as well. They are usually a percentage of the amount, a fixed amount per transaction, or a combination of both. On Shopify they come in two layers: your provider's processing fee and, if you don't use Shopify Payments, an extra Shopify transaction fee. You can find every payment option in our guide to Shopify payments.

In short

Cards cost a percentage plus a fixed amount; Bancontact and iDEAL | Wero cost only a fixed amount.

On Shopify, an extra transaction fee of 0.2% to 2% applies if you use a provider other than Shopify Payments.

When you issue a refund, you don't get the processing fee back.

Fixed amount, percentage or both

How a rate is structured determines what it costs you at a given order value. A worked example for an order of EUR 80 through Shopify Payments on the Basic plan:

Card (2% + EUR 0.25): EUR 1.60 + EUR 0.25 = EUR 1.85

Bancontact (fixed): EUR 0.39

iDEAL | Wero (fixed): EUR 0.29

Klarna (2.99% + EUR 0.35): EUR 2.39 + EUR 0.35 = EUR 2.74

The higher your order value, the more a fixed rate works in your favour.

Shopify transaction fees: the layers

Your provider's processing fee. You always pay this, either to Shopify Payments or to another payment provider.

Shopify third-party transaction fee. If you don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced) or 0.2% (Plus) on top of your provider's rate. Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, PayPal (when Shopify Payments is your primary provider), manual payment methods and POS are exempt.

Currency conversion. If a customer pays in another currency, Shopify Payments charges 2% for the conversion.

If you combine Shopify Payments with one direct third-party provider, you pay an extra 1.25% on Shop Pay and local methods processed through Shopify Payments. The full breakdown per plan is in our article on Shopify Payments fees.

Note: Mollie and Stripe show their own rate here. On Shopify, the third-party transaction fee comes on top. In Belgium and the Netherlands, Stripe is usually not available as a separate provider on Shopify.

Interchange: the cost beneath the cost

Every card rate includes an interchange fee that goes to the customer's bank. In the EU it is capped at 0.2% (debit) and 0.3% (credit) for consumer cards. Network fees and your provider's margin come on top. Shopify Payments, Mollie and Stripe charge one blended rate; Adyen uses Interchange++, where you see each layer separately.

What you don't get back

When you issue a refund, Shopify Payments keeps the original processing fee. For a chargeback in Belgium and the Netherlands you also pay EUR 15, which you get back if you win the dispute. Transaction fees are one part of your total Shopify costs, alongside your subscription and apps.

Frequently asked questions

What are transaction fees?

Transaction fees are the per-payment costs you pay to your payment provider, and on some platforms to the platform itself as well. They consist of a percentage, a fixed amount or both.

How much does Shopify charge in transaction fees?

With Shopify Payments you only pay the processing fee, for example 2% + EUR 0.25 for a European card on Basic. If you use another provider, Shopify charges an extra 0.2% to 2% on top, depending on your plan.

How do you avoid the Shopify third-party transaction fee?

By using Shopify Payments as your primary provider. PayPal is then exempt too. A higher plan lowers the fee if you still need another provider.

Do you get transaction fees back on a refund?

No. With Shopify Payments the original processing fee is not refunded, even on a full refund.
