Selling internationally

Selling in several countries from one Shopify store: markets, languages, currencies, domains and the SEO that makes each version findable.

Shopify lets one store sell to several countries, each with its own language, currency, prices and checkout settings. The tool for that is Shopify Markets, and the decisions around it are mostly about how much each country should differ.

Markets, languages and currencies

A market is a country or a group of countries you sell to. Per market you choose the language, the currency and whether prices convert automatically or are set by hand. Translations can be managed in Shopify or through a translation app.

Domains and SEO

Each market can live on its own domain or in a subfolder such as /nl or /fr. Either way, search engines need hreflang tags to know which version belongs to which country and language, which Shopify adds for markets that are set up correctly. Each language version also needs content optimised for that market, not only translated words. See Growth: SEO, CRO & marketing.

Shipping, duties and payments

Selling across borders also means shipping rates per region, duties and taxes, and payment methods buyers trust in each country, such as Bancontact in Belgium or iDEAL in the Netherlands. More in Payments & checkout.

Questions

What people ask about this topic.

Yes. Shopify supports several languages per store, and Shopify Markets lets you combine a language, currency and domain or subfolder per country.

Both work. Subfolders keep everything on one domain and are simpler to manage; separate country domains can build local trust. What matters most for SEO is correct hreflang and properly localised content.

Yes. Prices can convert automatically from your base currency, or you can set fixed prices per market.
