Adyen is a Dutch payment platform that processes online, in-store and in-app payments for large, international brands. On Shopify you can use Adyen as your primary card gateway, but only with an existing, approved Adyen account. For most Belgian and Dutch webshops, Shopify Payments remains the simplest choice; our guide to payments on Shopify explains why.

In short

Adyen is an enterprise payment platform with one contract for online and in-person payments across many countries.

Adyen on Shopify requires an approved Adyen account and switches off Shopify Payments.

Adyen charges Interchange++: attractive at high volumes, less predictable than a fixed rate.

What does Adyen do?

Adyen processes payments end to end: it accepts the payment, routes it to the card network and pays out to the merchant. Large retailers use Adyen to run their webshop, stores and apps on one platform, with one set of reporting across all countries.

Adyen on Shopify: how does it work?

You need an existing, approved Adyen account. Without that approval, Shopify recommends Shopify Payments.

If you activate Adyen as your primary gateway, Shopify Payments is switched off.

Klarna and PayPal don't work through the Adyen integration on Shopify.

Managed Markets is not supported and the Shopify Payments fraud tools, such as dispute management and card testing protection, are no longer available. Shopify's fraud analysis and Shopify Flow do keep working.

You choose the capture method yourself: automatic, manual or on fulfilment.

Shopify lists no plan requirement. In practice you mostly see Adyen with brands on Shopify Plus.

What does Adyen cost? Interchange++ explained

Adyen charges a fixed processing fee per transaction plus a fee per payment method. For cards, including Bancontact, that is Interchange++: you pay the actual interchange and scheme fees, plus a 0.60% margin. There are no setup or monthly fees, but there is a minimum invoice that depends on your industry. With Shopify Payments you pay a fixed percentage per plan; more on that under transaction fees.

When does Adyen make sense on Shopify?

Adyen fits when your group already works with Adyen, when you have high card volumes where Interchange++ comes out cheaper, or when you want stores and webshop in several countries on one acquiring contract. If you need Klarna in the checkout or want simplicity, choose something else. Our comparison of the best payment provider for Shopify puts the options side by side.

Example in a Shopify context

A Plus merchant with stores in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany already uses Adyen for its tills. By also setting up Adyen as payment gateway in Shopify, online and in-store revenue end up in one set of reporting. The brand does lose Klarna through that integration and has to work out how to offer buy now, pay later another way.
