Buy now, pay later (BNPL)

Also known as BNPL, pay later, pay in instalments, deferred payment

Buy now, pay later, or BNPL, lets your customer order now and pay later: after a fixed period or spread over a few instalments.

By Arthur Lauwers

Buy now, pay later, or BNPL, lets your customer order now and pay later: after a fixed period or spread over a few instalments. The BNPL provider, such as Klarna, in3 or Riverty, pays you as the webshop and collects the amount from the customer. On Shopify in Belgium and the Netherlands you offer it through Klarna in Shopify Payments or through an app such as Mollie. More on your options in our guide to Shopify payments.

In short

With buy now, pay later, the BNPL provider pays you; the customer pays the provider later.

Klarna is part of Shopify Payments (2.99% + EUR 0.35); you add in3 and Riverty through Mollie.

From 20 November 2026, most BNPL arrangements fall under the revised European consumer credit rules.

How does buy now, pay later work in a webshop?

The customer chooses buy now, pay later in the checkout.

The BNPL provider runs a quick check and approves or declines the purchase.

You ship the order and the provider pays you the amount, minus a fee.

The customer pays the provider later, in one go or in instalments.

The risk of non-payment usually lies with the provider; that is why the fee is higher than for Bancontact or iDEAL.

Shop Pay Installments, Shopify's own BNPL, is only available for stores in the US, Canada and the UK. How to activate Klarna is explained in Klarna and buy now, pay later on Shopify.

What does buy now, pay later cost per order?

On an order of EUR 80 you pay EUR 2.74 through Klarna in Shopify Payments (2.99% plus EUR 0.35). The same order through Bancontact costs EUR 0.39. On a refund you don't get the fee back, which matters for product categories with many returns. So check whether the higher conversion or order value makes up for the extra transaction fees.

Which rules apply?

The revised European Consumer Credit Directive (CCD2) brings most BNPL arrangements under consumer credit rules from 20 November 2026, including a creditworthiness check. Those obligations lie first and foremost with the BNPL provider. The exact details depend on national implementation in Belgium and the Netherlands. As a webshop, you follow your provider's communication guidelines.

Example in a Shopify context

A Dutch fashion webshop activates Klarna in Shopify Payments, alongside iDEAL | Wero. A second provider such as Mollie for in3 brings extra costs. Also take a look at the new European payment method Wero and the payment methods your webshop needs per country.
