Wero

Also known as iDEAL | Wero, EPI Wero, European Payments Initiative wallet

Wero is the European payment solution from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a partnership of European banks and payment companies.

By Arthur Lauwers

Wero is the European payment solution from the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a partnership of European banks and payment companies. Customers pay directly from account to account and confirm in their banking app or the Wero app. In the Netherlands, Wero is gradually replacing iDEAL; in Belgium, Wero sits alongside Bancontact. For Shopify stores, most of this happens in the background. See our guide to Shopify payments.

In short

Wero is a European account-to-account payment method backed by major European banks.

iDEAL will be fully absorbed into Wero by the end of 2027; since October 2026, payments have been moving to the Wero infrastructure.

In Belgium, shoppers have been able to pay online with Wero at the first banks and online stores since March 2026.

How does Wero work?

The customer chooses Wero at checkout and confirms on their smartphone. The money goes straight from account to account, without a card. EPI's backers include ING, KBC, Belfius, BNP Paribas, ABN AMRO, Rabobank and Worldline. In March 2026, Wero had more than 50 million registered users.

Why is iDEAL becoming Wero?

iDEAL accounts for around 70% of online payments in the Netherlands, but it only works within the Netherlands. Wero is meant to bring the same simplicity to all of Europe. The switch happens in phases:

WhenWhat
Early 2026Co-branding: iDEAL | Wero at checkout
October 2026All Dutch banks connected; iDEAL payments gradually move to the Wero infrastructure
From late 2026Wero features and the Wero logo replace the co-branding
31 December 2027Migration complete, iDEAL brand phased out
1 January 2028Full Purchase Protection for Wero payments

EPI says scheme prices will stay largely in line with iDEAL | Wero until the end of 2028. Read more about the impact on your checkout in iDEAL and Wero on Shopify.

Wero in Belgium

Since 3 March 2026, shoppers in Belgium can pay online with Wero, starting with customers of ING, KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis. The Payconiq by Bancontact app is now called Bancontact Pay, and since spring 2026 merchants can accept Wero alongside Bancontact. For Belgian online stores, Bancontact on Shopify remains the most important local method for now.

What does your online store need to do?

If you use Shopify Payments or a large PSP, your provider handles the technical switch. Adyen, Buckaroo and Mollie have signed up to the EPI roadmap.

Review your payment settings once the Wero logo replaces the co-branding, and update the payment icons in your footer and FAQ.

If you run a custom or older integration, ask your developer whether anything needs to change.

Note that iDEAL | Wero payments have no chargebacks; refunds are possible for up to 180 days.

Example in a Shopify context

A Belgian brand also sells in the Netherlands through Shopify Payments, where customers see iDEAL | Wero alongside cards and buy now, pay later. The team rebuilds nothing and only updates the payment icons and the FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

What is Wero?

Wero is a European payment solution from banks united in EPI. You pay directly from account to account and confirm on your smartphone.

Why is iDEAL becoming Wero?

iDEAL only works in the Netherlands. Wero brings the same kind of bank payment to all of Europe, under one brand and with more features, such as Purchase Protection from 2028.

When will iDEAL disappear?

The migration must be complete by 31 December 2027 at the latest. Until then you will see iDEAL | Wero as co-branding, and from late 2026 only the Wero logo will gradually appear.

Does my Shopify store need to do anything for Wero?

With Shopify Payments or a large PSP, the technical switch happens in the background. Do update your payment icons and explanations, and have any custom integrations checked.

In Belgium, Bancontact remains the standard for now; how to activate it is in how to activate Bancontact on your Shopify store. What each payment method costs is in Shopify Payments fees and rates.
