A payment terminal is the device you use in your shop to accept card and mobile payments: the customer taps or inserts their card, and your payment provider processes the payment. With Shopify POS you use a card reader such as the WisePad 3 or the POS Terminal, or your iPhone or Android device with Tap to Pay. In short
A payment terminal accepts card and wallet payments in store and passes them on to your payment provider.
With Shopify POS in Belgium and the Netherlands: WisePad 3 (EUR 59), POS Terminal (EUR 229) or Tap to Pay with no extra hardware.
A note for Belgian shops: Bancontact as a local payment method does not work in the Shopify POS app.
How does a payment terminal work?
The terminal reads the customer's card or smartphone and sends the payment through your payment provider to the card network and the bank. With Shopify POS, the terminal is linked to your point-of-sale app, so sales, stock and customer data sit straight away in the same Shopify admin as your online store.

What does a payment terminal cost with Shopify?
On top of the hardware, you pay an in-person rate per transaction through Shopify Payments: 1.4% on Basic, 1.3% on Grow, 1.2% on Advanced and 1.1% on Plus (checked in October 2026). On a EUR 50 purchase on Grow, that is EUR 0.65. To see how these rates compare with online payments, read about transaction fees.
Bancontact in store: the main limitation
According to Shopify, Bancontact as a local payment method cannot be used in the Shopify POS app. Many Belgian customers pay in store with their Bancontact card. Whether a card carrying both Bancontact and a Maestro, Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard logo works on the WisePad 3 has not been officially confirmed. Test this before you open.
Example in a Shopify context
A concept store in Ghent with a Shopify online store uses Tap to Pay on an iPhone for pop-ups and a POS Terminal at the counter. Online and in-store sales share the same stock, which is the basis of an omnichannel approach. For customers who want to pay by app, it is worth keeping an eye on Wero and Bancontact Pay.
