In Belgium, Shopify POS costs your Shopify subscription (from EUR 24 per month), POS Lite for free or POS Pro at EUR 79 per month per store, your hardware and a card rate of 1.4% on Basic down to 1.1% on Plus through Shopify Payments. Bancontact doesn't work as a local payment method in Shopify POS. Below you'll find every cost, what happens to your money and how to bring the bill down.

This article is part of our guide to Shopify POS for your store. If you sell both online and in a store, that's omnichannel: one inventory, one customer base and one payout.

The four costs of Shopify POS

POS Lite or POS Pro?

POS Lite is in every subscription. You sell, take payments, look up customers and see your orders. For a store with the owner and one regular employee, that's often enough.

POS Pro adds what you need with more people and more stock: staff roles with their own permissions, inventory management per store, in-store sales with home delivery and reports per staff member. You pay for Pro per location, so you can put your busy store on Pro and keep a pop-up on Lite. On Shopify Plus, POS Pro is included for up to 200 locations.

Shopify Payments in your store

Since January 2022 you can take in-store payments in Belgium with Shopify Payments, using the WisePad 3 card reader or Tap to Pay on iPhone. It's the same account as your online payments. You pay a percentage per card payment, with no fixed amount on top.

Watch out with Bancontact. Shopify states that Bancontact as a local payment method can't be used for in-store sales through Shopify POS. So test in advance which Belgian bank cards your reader accepts. Online, Bancontact does work; how to switch it on is in how to activate Bancontact on your Shopify store.

A worked example for a store with EUR 20,000 in card payments per month: on Basic you pay EUR 280, on Grow EUR 260 and on Advanced EUR 240. Each step saves EUR 20, while Grow costs EUR 45 per month more than Basic. For your store alone, an upgrade only pays for itself from EUR 45,000 in card payments per month.

What happens to your money

An in-store card payment follows the same path as an online payment:

The customer pays. The amount lands in your Shopify Payments balance, and the card rate is deducted straight away.

Shopify processes the payment. In Belgium and the Netherlands that takes at least three business days. New stores may wait longer at first.

Shopify pays out on your schedule. Daily, weekly or monthly, and switching is free. Payments from Friday to Sunday are combined into one payout.

The money reaches your account. When a payout shows Deposited, it has left. Your bank then needs one to three more business days.

Online and in-store sales arrive in the same payout, and per payout you see every transaction. An in-store refund comes off your balance, and you don't get the card rate back. If your balance is too low, Shopify collects the amount by SEPA direct debit in some EU countries. With a dispute or chargeback Shopify can hold funds temporarily, and if you change your bank account, payouts pause for three to five business days. Cash sales don't go through Shopify Payments: that money is in your cash drawer.

How to lower your POS costs

Only switch on POS Pro where you need it. Pro is per location. A small store or pop-up often runs fine on Lite.

Start with Tap to Pay on iPhone. Don't buy a card reader until you know how many tills you really need.

Use an external payment terminal. You can use a terminal from your bank or a Belgian terminal provider, which also accepts Bancontact, and record the payment in Shopify POS as a separate payment method. Shopify charges no fee for other payment providers on in-store sales. The downside: you key in the amount separately, the money arrives through a different payout, refunds run through the terminal and you have to reconcile two systems. It pays off mainly when many customers in your store pay with Bancontact.

Add online and in-store together. A higher plan also lowers your online card rate. Add up both savings before you decide; Shopify Payments fees and rates lists every rate per plan.

Exchange rather than refund. With a card refund you lose the card rate. An exchange or store credit costs you nothing extra.

How 6th Man helps

We set up Shopify POS for stores that also sell online: Lite or Pro per location, one inventory for store and webshop, and a test of your card reader with Belgian cards before you open.
