Peppol and e-invoicing with Shopify: mandatory in Belgium, here's how
Shopify doesn't send Peppol invoices itself. When your store needs e-invoicing and the three ways to connect it to Shopify.

Shopify doesn't send Peppol invoices itself. If you sell to Belgian businesses with a VAT number, you've had to send a structured e-invoice for those orders since 1 January 2026, in practice through Peppol. You handle it by connecting Shopify to an accounting package, ERP or app with a Peppol access point.
What Peppol is and what the law requires is in our explanation of Peppol. This article is about practice in your Shopify store.
When do you need Peppol in Shopify?
Order from a Belgian business with a VAT number: yes, it gets a Peppol invoice.
Order from a consumer: no. B2C falls outside the obligation.
Order from a business in another EU country: not under the Belgian obligation. You send a correct intra-community invoice.
Even if you only sell to consumers, you must be able to receive invoices from your Belgian suppliers through Peppol. Your accounting package usually covers that already.
Three ways to connect Peppol to Shopify
An accounting package with Peppol and a Shopify integration. The most common route. Orders flow automatically into your accounting, which creates the invoice and sends it to business customers through Peppol. Packages such as Billit, Exact Online and Odoo work with Peppol.
An app from the Shopify App Store. Useful when your accountant uses a package without a Shopify integration. Check that the app sends through a certified access point, carries over VAT correctly and creates credit notes for refunds.
Through your ERP. If you run stock and orders in an ERP, that system creates the invoice and sends it through Peppol. Shopify only delivers the order.
What to set up in your store
VAT number and company name in the checkout. Without a VAT number your integration doesn't know who should get a Peppol invoice. Since April 2026, company accounts with their own prices and payment terms are available on every Shopify plan; more in our guide to B2B on Shopify.
Credit notes for refunds. A refund to a business requires a credit note, also through Peppol.
A test with your accountant. Place a test order with a real VAT number and check that the invoice arrives correctly.
How 6th Man helps
We connect Shopify to your accounting or ERP, so business orders leave automatically as Peppol invoices while consumer orders run as usual. See which integrations we build for Shopify or book a call.
What people ask about this.
No. You need an accounting package, ERP or app with a Peppol access point that turns Shopify orders into e-invoices.
Not for your sales invoices. You must be able to receive Peppol invoices from your Belgian suppliers, though.
Then you don't meet the obligation and risk fines of up to EUR 5,000. Your customer also can't process the invoice correctly.
We build, migrate and grow Shopify stores.
One team for the build, the move to Shopify and the growth after launch, so nothing gets dropped at a handoff.
