Shopify Payments costs are transaction fees: there is no monthly fee and no setup fee. In Belgium an online card payment costs 2% + EUR 0.25 on Basic down to 1.4% + EUR 0.25 on Plus. Bancontact is a flat EUR 0.39 (Plus: EUR 0.29) and iDEAL | Wero EUR 0.29. If you choose another provider, Shopify adds an extra fee. Checked in October 2026.

This article lists every Shopify Payments rate per plan, what you pay on refunds and chargebacks, and how to translate that to your own store with a Belgian payment mix. It is part of our guide to Shopify payments in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Shopify Payments fees: the three layers

What you spend on payments each month has three layers:

Your Shopify subscription. The plan sets your rate: the pricier the plan, the lower the percentage on card payments.

The transaction fees per payment method. They differ a lot: Bancontact and iDEAL | Wero are flat amounts, cards and Klarna a percentage plus a fixed amount.

The third-party fee. You only pay this when you use another provider instead of Shopify Payments.

On top of that come costs per event: chargebacks, currency conversion and the fee you don't get back on a refund. Payment fees are only one part of what Shopify costs in total; apps, theme and development are covered in our cost overview.

Among our clients, one line surprises people most after the first month: card fees on high order values. Bancontact costs EUR 0.39 whether your customer pays EUR 30 or EUR 1,500. A EUR 1,500 card payment on Basic costs 2% + EUR 0.25, so EUR 30.25. If you sell expensive products, your card share weighs more than your average rate suggests.

Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay cost nothing extra: you pay the rate of the underlying card.

Standard cards are cards issued in the EU/EEA. Amex and cards from outside the EEA fall under the higher rate.

The Netherlands: we assume the same euro rates as in Belgium; check your own rates in your admin.

No fixed fees: Shopify Payments has no monthly fee and no setup fee. How to activate it is in our guide to setting up Shopify Payments in Belgium.

What does another payment provider cost on Shopify?

If you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a third-party fee on the full order value on top of that provider's rate.

PlanThird-party fee
Basic2%
Grow1%
Advanced0.6%
Plus0.2%

No fee applies to Shopify Payments and Shop Pay, to PayPal when Shopify Payments is your main provider, to manual methods such as bank transfer, to POS sales and to test orders. Since 12 May 2025 the fee for an external provider also applies to the part paid with a gift card or store credit.

Combining costs something too. Next to Shopify Payments you may use one direct external provider. Shop Pay and the local methods through Shopify Payments then pay the standard rate plus 1.25%, and the transactions at the other provider pay the third-party fee. For a EUR 80 Bancontact order that is EUR 0.39 + 1.25% of EUR 80 (EUR 1.00) = EUR 1.39 instead of EUR 0.39.

We rarely combine. It pays off in two cases: when Shopify Payments doesn't allow your industry, such as certain medical products, or when your backend is already fully set up on another provider and switching costs more than the fee. In every other case Shopify Payments as your only provider is the cheapest and simplest choice.

PayPal is connected in Belgium and the Netherlands with your own PayPal account. PayPal charges 3.40% + EUR 0.35 per commercial transaction: for an EUR 80 order that is EUR 3.07. Want to see Mollie's rates next to it? We do that in our article Shopify Payments vs Mollie.

Worked examples: what do you pay per month?

Example 1: Belgian store with the average Belgian payment mix

Assumptions: average order value EUR 80, 500 orders per month, so EUR 40,000 in revenue. We use the Belgian payment mix from our payment simulator: 73% Bancontact (365 orders), 15% European card (75 orders, EUR 6,000.00), 5% Klarna (25 orders, EUR 2,000.00), 4% iDEAL | Wero (20 orders) and 3% PayPal (15 orders, EUR 1,200.00). Among our own Belgian clients we typically see more than 60% through Bancontact, so this mix is realistic.

The calculation on Basic:

Bancontact: 365 x EUR 0.39 = EUR 142.35

Card: 2% x EUR 6,000.00 = EUR 120.00, plus 75 x EUR 0.25 = EUR 18.75, together EUR 138.75

Klarna: 2.99% x EUR 2,000.00 = EUR 59.80, plus 25 x EUR 0.35 = EUR 8.75, together EUR 68.55

iDEAL | Wero: 20 x EUR 0.29 = EUR 5.80

PayPal (own account, no Shopify fee): 3.40% x EUR 1,200.00 + 15 x EUR 0.35 = EUR 46.05

Total: EUR 401.50, or 1.00% of your revenue

PlanBancontactCardKlarnaiDEAL | Wero + PayPalPayment fees% of revenueIncl. subscription (monthly / yearly)
BasicEUR 142.35EUR 138.75EUR 68.55EUR 51.85EUR 401.501.00%EUR 433.50 / EUR 425.50
GrowEUR 142.35EUR 126.75EUR 68.55EUR 51.85EUR 389.500.97%EUR 481.50 / EUR 458.50
AdvancedEUR 142.35EUR 114.75EUR 68.55EUR 51.85EUR 377.500.94%EUR 761.50 / EUR 666.50
PlusEUR 105.85EUR 102.75EUR 52.55EUR 49.05EUR 310.200.78%from EUR 2,410.20

What stands out? Going from Basic to Grow saves you EUR 12.00 in payment fees, but the subscription costs EUR 60 (monthly) or EUR 45 (yearly) more. With this much Bancontact, Basic is cheaper on payment fees alone. The higher your card share and order value, the sooner that tips.

Example 2: Dutch store with a lot of iDEAL | Wero

Same order value and volume, on Basic, with 70% iDEAL | Wero (350 orders), 25% card (125 orders, EUR 10,000) and 5% Klarna (25 orders, EUR 2,000):

iDEAL | Wero: 350 x EUR 0.29 = EUR 101.50

Card: 2% x EUR 10,000 = EUR 200.00, plus 125 x EUR 0.25 = EUR 31.25, together EUR 231.25

Klarna: 2.99% x EUR 2,000 = EUR 59.80, plus 25 x EUR 0.35 = EUR 8.75, together EUR 68.55

Total: EUR 401.30, or 1.00% of your revenue

Example 3: the same Belgian store with an external provider

If the store from example 1 processes all payments through another provider, Basic adds 2% x EUR 40,000 = EUR 800 in Shopify fees on top of that provider's costs. On Grow that is EUR 400, on Advanced EUR 240. On Basic, that fee alone is already double the full payment cost with Shopify Payments (EUR 401.50).

When does Grow or Advanced pay off on payment fees?

A pricier plan only lowers the percentage on card payments. Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero and Klarna cost exactly the same on Basic, Grow and Advanced. The break-even point therefore depends on your card revenue per month:

Basic to Grow: 0.2 percentage points less on cards. The subscription costs EUR 60 more (billed monthly), so EUR 60 / 0.002 = EUR 30,000 in card revenue per month. Billed yearly: EUR 45 / 0.002 = EUR 22,500.

Grow to Advanced: again 0.2 percentage points on EU cards (only 0.1 on Amex and international cards). The subscription costs EUR 292 more, so EUR 292 / 0.002 = EUR 146,000 in card revenue per month. Yearly: EUR 220 / 0.002 = EUR 110,000.

Shopify Plus also lowers Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero and Klarna. You rarely decide on payment fees alone there; the features weigh more.

Those break-even points match what we see with clients, on one condition: calculate with your real payment mix. For a Belgian store where most customers pay with Bancontact, the point is further away than you'd think. Grow or Advanced can still pay off for the features; count the payment fees as a bonus then.

Refunds, chargebacks and currency fees

Refunds: you don't get the original transaction fee back, not for iDEAL | Wero or Klarna either. A fully refunded EUR 80 card order on Basic therefore costs you EUR 1.85 (2% of EUR 80 plus EUR 0.25); with Klarna it is EUR 2.74.

Chargebacks: a chargeback costs EUR 15 in Belgium and the Netherlands. If you win the dispute, you get that amount back. Chargebacks are not possible with iDEAL | Wero.

Currency conversion: if a customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency, Shopify Payments charges a 2% conversion fee. A Swiss customer paying the equivalent of EUR 100 with a Swiss card costs you 3.2% + EUR 0.25 (EUR 3.45) plus EUR 2.00 conversion on Basic.

Minimum amount: we didn't find a minimum transaction amount on an official Shopify page; check your admin if you have many small orders.

All of these costs are settled in your payouts. How to read and reconcile them is in our article on Shopify Payments payouts. Want the full picture of all Shopify fees, including apps and subscription? That is in Shopify fees explained.

What we learned in the Shopify Community

Problem: a Benelux merchant wanted to move from Mollie to Shopify Payments but found a percentage on iDEAL unacceptable and wanted a flat fee. Solution: Shopify Payments now charges flat amounts: EUR 0.29 for iDEAL | Wero and EUR 0.39 for Bancontact. Status: outdated (objection resolved by flat rates). 6th Man's take: merchants who stay with Mollie today rarely do so for the rate; it's method coverage, habits or an accounting or backend integration that is already in place. Source: Reddit r/shopify, late 2024: https://www.reddit.com/r/shopify/comments/1h1wjo4/thoughts_on_shopify_payments/

Problem: a merchant had to find a new provider after their old gateway shut down and wanted to avoid Shopify Payments. Solution: other merchants pointed out that Shopify's fee on external gateways often makes them as expensive as Shopify Payments. No final choice in the thread. Status: still valid. 6th Man's take: an external provider only pays off when Shopify Payments doesn't allow your industry or when your backend already runs on it; at any other volume you serve customers better with the methods they know, and losing revenue over a missing method costs more than a fee. How 6th Man helps

We calculate your payment fees on your real payment mix instead of on averages, and check which plan and provider combination comes out cheapest. Then we set up the payment methods in your store so customers see the method they trust first. Negotiating rates only makes sense at a decent volume; for a small store a missing payment method weighs more than a few cents per order. Start with the payment simulator.
