Bancontact

Bancontact is the Belgian payment brand that lets you pay online, in store and by app with your Belgian bank account. It is the most popular way to pay in Belgium: in 2024, Bancontact and Payconiq together processed more than 2.5 billion payments. How does Bancontact work?

Almost every Belgian bank card carries the Bancontact logo. Online, customers pay with the card and a card reader, or faster with their smartphone through their banking app or the Bancontact Pay app. In 2024 there were 382 million online Bancontact payments, and 90% of them were made by smartphone.

Since 2026, Bancontact Company has used three names for online payments: Bancontact Pay (with the app), Bancontact Card (with the card) and Bancontact One Click (fast payment at online stores that already know your card). The former Payconiq app became Bancontact Pay.

Bancontact on Shopify

Bancontact is built into Shopify Payments: a fixed EUR 0.39 per payment on Basic, Grow and Advanced, EUR 0.29 on Plus.

Only customers in Belgium paying in euros see Bancontact.

You cannot test it in test mode, and it does not work in the Shopify POS app.

An order can briefly show as 'Payment pending'.

If you use Mollie or another provider for Bancontact, you pay Shopify's fee for third-party providers on top of their rate.

Example in a Shopify context

A Ghent online store selling home decor sells mainly to Belgians. With Bancontact at the top of the checkout, the store pays a fixed amount per order instead of a percentage. If the brand expands to the Netherlands, Wero (iDEAL | Wero) is added for Dutch customers.
