iDEAL

iDEAL is the Dutch payment method that lets customers pay online directly through their own bank. Around 70% of online payments in the Netherlands go through iDEAL. How does an iDEAL payment work?

The customer chooses iDEAL at checkout, opens their banking app via a link or QR code and confirms the amount. The money goes straight from their account to the online store, and the order is marked as paid immediately. iDEAL processes more than a billion transactions a year, an average of 3.5 million a day.

iDEAL on Shopify

iDEAL | Wero is part of Shopify Payments: a fixed EUR 0.29 on Basic, Grow and Advanced, EUR 0.15 on Plus.

Only customers in the Netherlands paying in euros see iDEAL. Your store needs the Netherlands as an active market and a published legal notice.

A customer cannot reverse an iDEAL payment through a chargeback. You can still issue refunds for up to 180 days after the purchase.

When you issue a refund, the transaction fee is not returned.

From iDEAL to Wero

The European Payments Initiative is turning iDEAL into Wero, a European payment method. Since October 2026, all Dutch banks have been connected and iDEAL payments are gradually moving over. A Belgian personal care brand adds the Netherlands as a market in Shopify. Dutch customers see iDEAL | Wero at the top, Belgian customers see Bancontact. Because iDEAL has no chargebacks, the risk of disputed payments on those orders is lower than with cards.
