Payconiq (Bancontact Pay)

Also known as Payconiq by Bancontact, Bancontact Pay

Payconiq was the Belgian app for paying with a QR code, in store, online and between friends.

By Arthur Lauwers

Payconiq was the Belgian app for paying with a QR code, in store, online and between friends. The brand is disappearing in 2026: the Payconiq by Bancontact app is now called Bancontact Pay, and merchants accept Bancontact and Wero through the same QR code. For online stores, Payconiq has therefore merged with Bancontact. Our guide to Shopify payments shows which methods you actually need.

In short

The Payconiq by Bancontact app became Bancontact Pay through an automatic update.

Merchant tools are now called Bancontact Pro; existing QR codes keep working.

On Shopify, you offer these payments through Bancontact; there is no separate Payconiq integration.

What was Payconiq?

Payconiq by Bancontact was the mobile payment app of Bancontact Payconiq Company, available to customers of 17 Belgian banks and used by around 2 million people. You scanned a QR code at the till or on an invoice and confirmed in the app. Merchants received a QR code sticker or the Payconiq GO app.

Since spring 2026, merchants can accept Wero alongside Bancontact. According to Bancontact Company, current prices are frozen until the end of 2026. If you used Payconiq through your own API integration, updating the endpoint is usually enough; the API key stays the same.

What does this mean for your Shopify store?

On Shopify you do not connect a separate Payconiq method. Belgian customers pay through Bancontact, which costs EUR 0.39 per payment in Shopify Payments (EUR 0.29 on Plus). Read how to set it up in how to activate Bancontact on Shopify. If you look beyond Belgium, keep an eye on Wero: the European successor for app-based bank payments.

In store, things are different. Bancontact as a local method does not work in the Shopify POS app. If you use a separate Bancontact Pro QR sticker alongside your payment terminal, those payments run outside Shopify and you need to reconcile them separately in your accounts.

Example in a Shopify context

An Antwerp bakery with an online store had a Payconiq sticker at the till. The sticker keeps working and is being replaced by a version with Bancontact Pay and Wero. Online, customers pay with Bancontact in the Shopify checkout; nothing changes there.

Frequently asked questions

Does Payconiq still exist?

The brand is being phased out during 2026. The app became Bancontact Pay and keeps the same features.

Has Payconiq become Bancontact Pay?

Yes. The Payconiq by Bancontact app received an automatic update to Bancontact Pay; you do not need to reinstall anything.

Do I need to do anything as a merchant?

With a sticker or the GO app, the switch happens automatically. With your own integration, you usually only need to update the API endpoint.

Can I use Payconiq in my Shopify store?

There is no separate Payconiq method in Shopify. Belgian customers pay through Bancontact in Shopify Payments.
