Mollie vs Stripe for your online store: fees side by side, a worked example for Belgium and what to choose on Shopify, WooCommerce or your own platform.

Mollie vs Stripe: Stripe is cheaper for standard European cards (1.5% + EUR 0.25 versus 1.80% + EUR 0.25) and stronger for developers, subscriptions and international sales. Mollie wins on Belgian and Dutch payment methods such as in3, Riverty and the KBC and Belfius payment buttons. On Shopify in Belgium and the Netherlands you can't pick Stripe separately.
Below we put the fees side by side, run the numbers for a Belgian store and say what to choose per platform. The full overview of payments on Shopify is in our guide to Shopify payments. Fees checked November 2026 for a Belgian account.
Mollie and Stripe in short
Mollie is a payment provider from Amsterdam, strong in the Benelux and with support in Dutch. Stripe comes from the US and Ireland and is the standard for platforms that build a lot themselves through the API. Both are a payment provider that processes cards, wallets and local methods, without monthly fees for online payments.
Mollie vs Stripe: the fees side by side
| Payment method | Mollie | Stripe |
|---|---|---|
| European consumer card | 1.80% + EUR 0.25 | 1.5% + EUR 0.25 |
| Premium or business card | 2.90% + EUR 0.25 (EEA business card) | 2.8% + EUR 0.25 (premium card) |
| Card from outside the EEA | 3.25% + EUR 0.25 | 3.15% + EUR 0.25, plus 2% for currency conversion |
| Bancontact | EUR 0.39 | EUR 0.35 |
| iDEAL | Wero | EUR 0.32 | EUR 0.29 |
| Klarna | 2.99% + EUR 0.45 | 2.99% + EUR 0.35 |
| Extra Benelux methods | in3, Riverty, KBC/CBC and Belfius payment buttons, SEPA bank transfer | Not in the standard fees for Belgium |
| Monthly fees online | None | None |
Watch out with Mollie's Bancontact price: the Belgian pricing page shows 1.40% + EUR 0.25 as well as EUR 0.39. Check the rate for your account before you do the maths.
Worked example: a Belgian store
Take 1,000 payments a month of EUR 80 on average: 60% Bancontact, 30% European consumer cards and 10% iDEAL | Wero from Dutch customers.
Mollie: EUR 234 (Bancontact) + EUR 507 (cards) + EUR 32 (iDEAL | Wero) = EUR 773 a month.
Stripe: EUR 210 (Bancontact) + EUR 435 (cards) + EUR 29 (iDEAL | Wero) = EUR 674 a month, if all cards are standard cards.
In this example Stripe is about EUR 100 a month cheaper. If many customers pay with a premium card, that tips: at 2.8% + EUR 0.25 the same 300 card payments cost EUR 747 at Stripe instead of EUR 435. So your card mix decides who is cheaper. Run your own mix through our payment simulator.
Where Mollie wins
Benelux methods such as in3, Riverty, the KBC/CBC and Belfius payment buttons and SEPA bank transfer.
Support in Dutch and a quick start, without a developer.
Ready-made integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento.
Where Stripe wins
A lower fee for standard European cards, Bancontact and iDEAL | Wero.
A strong API and developer tools, for platforms that build a lot themselves.
Subscriptions and invoicing with Stripe Billing, and marketplaces with Stripe Connect.
International sales in many currencies.
And on Shopify?
On Shopify it's different. In Belgium and the Netherlands you can't pick Stripe as a separate provider. Why, you read in Shopify Payments vs Stripe. Mollie does work, through the Mollie app, but Shopify then adds an extra transaction fee of 2% on Basic to 0.2% on Plus. That's why Shopify Payments is usually cheaper than Mollie.
Mollie or Stripe: what do you choose?
Shopify store in Belgium or the Netherlands: Shopify Payments, with Mollie only for a method you really miss.
WooCommerce, Magento or another store with mainly Belgian and Dutch customers: Mollie.
Your own platform, SaaS, subscriptions or many international customers: Stripe.
More options side by side, such as Adyen and PayPal, you read in our guide to the best payment provider for Shopify.
What we learned in the Shopify Community
Mollie works, but the Shopify fee counts. Problem: merchants who can't use iDEAL through Shopify Payments switch to Mollie. Solution: that works, but one merchant calculates that a EUR 40 order on Basic costs about EUR 0.80 in Shopify fees on top of Mollie's rate. Our take: always count the extra fee before you pick an external provider. Source: Shopify Community thread (September 2025 to May 2026).
Klarna through Mollie costs extra. Problem: a Dutch merchant sees an extra 2% on Klarna through Mollie. Solution: Shopify confirmed that external providers carry a transaction fee. That solution is partly outdated: Klarna is now part of Shopify Payments for Belgium and the Netherlands. Our take: check what Shopify Payments offers itself first. Source: Shopify Community thread (2023, latest reply November 2024).
Alternatives when iDEAL disappears. Problem: a Dutch store loses iDEAL through Shopify Payments. Solution: others recommend Mollie or Pay., or checkout apps built on Stripe. Our take: a provider that works inside the Shopify checkout is the safest route. Source: Shopify Community thread (September 2025).
How 6th Man helps
We set up payments for Shopify stores, with Shopify Payments and, where needed, Mollie for an extra method. If a platform on Stripe runs next to your store, we make sure both work together and arrive correctly in your accounting. See how we build custom Shopify stores.
What people ask about this.
For standard European cards, yes: 1.5% + EUR 0.25 at Stripe versus 1.80% + EUR 0.25 at Mollie. Bancontact (EUR 0.35 versus EUR 0.39) and iDEAL | Wero (EUR 0.29 versus EUR 0.32) are also cheaper at Stripe. For premium cards Stripe charges 2.8% + EUR 0.25, so Mollie can come out cheaper with many premium cards. Fees checked November 2026.
Mollie offers in3, Riverty, the KBC/CBC and Belfius payment buttons and SEPA bank transfer. These aren't in Stripe's standard fees for Belgium. Both offer Bancontact, iDEAL | Wero and Klarna.
Mollie yes, through the Mollie app, but Shopify then charges an extra transaction fee of 2% (Basic) to 0.2% (Plus). Stripe can't be chosen as a separate provider on Shopify in Belgium and the Netherlands, because Shopify Payments is available there.
Not for online payments. You pay per transaction. Mollie does charge EUR 20 per month for the Pro plan with payment terminals, and Stripe has optional subscriptions for extra products such as Billing and Tax.
