Shopify iDEAL: through Shopify Payments, iDEAL | Wero appears automatically in your checkout for Dutch customers paying in euros, once Shopify approves your store. It costs EUR 0.29 per payment (EUR 0.15 on Plus). iDEAL is moving to Wero, but for you as a merchant little changes.

Below you read what changes, what it costs, how to activate it and what to do if iDEAL doesn't appear. All payment methods in one place are in our guide to Shopify payments in Belgium and the Netherlands. Facts checked November 2026.

What changes with iDEAL and Wero?

iDEAL is the most popular online payment method in the Netherlands, used for about 70% of online payments. Since early 2026 the method is called iDEAL | Wero. Wero is the European payment method of EPI, a collaboration of major European banks. From late 2026 Wero features are added and the Wero logo gradually replaces the co-branding. By the end of 2027 the move should be complete and the iDEAL brand disappears.

For your customer little changes: they still pay from their banking app. For you as a Shopify merchant neither: iDEAL | Wero stays the same method in your checkout. In Belgium, Wero is meanwhile replacing Payconiq by Bancontact, and paying with Wero in online stores has been possible there since March 2026.

What does iDEAL | Wero cost on Shopify?

ProviderPer paymentNote
Shopify Payments (Basic to Advanced)EUR 0.29No extra Shopify fee
Shopify Payments (Plus)EUR 0.15No extra Shopify fee
MollieEUR 0.32Plus the Shopify fee of 2% (Basic) to 0.2% (Plus) of the order value
StripeEUR 0.29Can't be chosen as a separate provider on Shopify in Belgium and the Netherlands

Because of the fixed price per payment, iDEAL | Wero is cheaper than a card, especially at higher order values. You don't get the processing fee back when you refund a payment. All fees per method are in Shopify Payments fees and rates, and how the Shopify fee works with Mollie, you read in Shopify Payments vs Mollie.

How do you activate iDEAL | Wero in Shopify?

iDEAL | Wero connects automatically to Shopify Payments, but only after Shopify approves your store. Shopify reviews this regularly and emails the owner once it's done. This needs to be in order:

Shopify Payments is set up and your identity is verified.

Your store accepts euros and the Netherlands is an active market in Shopify Markets.

Your online store is public and not in password mode.

You have a published legal notice with your company name, address and contact details.

Your store looks trustworthy: a clear refund policy, accurate product information, reachable contact details, and you follow Shopify's acceptable use policy.

After that, iDEAL | Wero only appears for customers with a Dutch address paying in euros. Belgian customers don't see it. For them Bancontact is the standard: here's how to activate Bancontact on your Shopify store.

iDEAL | Wero doesn't appear in your checkout

The Netherlands isn't an active market, or the customer doesn't pay in euros.

The customer's billing address isn't Dutch. In March 2026 the Netherlands was briefly not preselected in some checkouts, so iDEAL only appeared after the customer chose the country. Shopify has since fixed this.

Your store isn't approved yet. Some merchants report in the Shopify Community that they only got iDEAL after a number of orders. Shopify doesn't officially confirm such a threshold.

The method was switched off. Multiple complaints to local authorities can lead Shopify to disable iDEAL | Wero for your store.

If you don't get access, you can offer iDEAL through an external provider such as Mollie. Count the extra Shopify fee in that case. Which provider fits, you read in our guide to the best payment provider for Shopify.

Refunds, chargebacks and subscriptions

You can refund up to 180 days after the payment.

Customers can't dispute an iDEAL | Wero payment through their bank, so there are no chargebacks. You handle complaints directly with the customer.

An order can briefly show 'Payment pending'. Only ship once the payment is confirmed, and make sure your apps and sales channels check that too.

iDEAL doesn't support automatic recurring payments. For subscriptions you use iDEAL for the first payment and another method for renewals, depending on your subscription app.

Selling from Belgium to the Netherlands?

Add the Netherlands as a market and set euros as the currency. After approval, iDEAL | Wero then appears automatically for Dutch customers, next to Bancontact for Belgian customers. Also check that your legal notice is published, because it's a condition for iDEAL.

What we learned in the Shopify Community

iDEAL suddenly switched off. Problem: a Dutch merchant loses iDEAL after changed eligibility criteria. Solution: Shopify support points to an external provider such as Mollie, others also mention Pay. Our take: keep your store in order on the points Shopify checks, and have a plan B ready. Source: Shopify Community thread (September 2025).

iDEAL only after a number of orders? Problem: a merchant reports they can only use iDEAL after 100 orders. Solution: unsolved; others switch to Mollie. Shopify doesn't confirm that rule in its documentation. Our take: treat it as a rumour, and check in your admin what Shopify asks of your store. Source: Shopify Community thread (September 2025 to May 2026).

iDEAL disappears because of the country selection. Problem: the Netherlands was no longer preselected in the checkout, so iDEAL stayed hidden. Solution: Shopify support called it a background update and fixed it. Our take: test your checkout from the Netherlands after every big Shopify update. Source: Shopify Community thread (March 2026).

Subscriptions with iDEAL. Problem: a new Dutch merchant wants subscriptions paid with iDEAL. Solution: iDEAL doesn't support automatic recurring payments; the first payment via iDEAL and renewals via another method is the common approach. Our take: choose your subscription app based on the methods it supports for renewals. Source: Shopify Community thread (February 2026).
