Which payment methods your store needs depends on where your customers live. In Belgium Bancontact is the basis, in the Netherlands iDEAL | Wero, in Germany PayPal and invoice payment, in France the bank card. Everywhere, customers also expect Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. With Shopify Payments you cover most of that in one contract.

This article is part of our guide to Shopify payments in Belgium and the Netherlands. You get an overview per country, with figures from official sources, and per method how to offer it on Shopify. At the bottom is a decision tree to choose your own mix.

The basics: payment options that work in every country

A few payment options every store needs, whatever the country:

Cards: Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and American Express. With Shopify Payments they are on automatically.

Wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay are on automatically with Shopify Payments in Belgium and the Netherlands, without a surcharge.

PayPal: in Belgium and the Netherlands a separate connection through PayPal Express Checkout. As long as Shopify Payments is your main provider, you pay no extra Shopify fee on it.

Good to know: Shopify shows local methods based on where your customer is, not where your store is based. A Dutch customer in your Belgian store sees iDEAL | Wero, a Belgian customer sees Bancontact. For countries outside your own, you do need to set them up as a market in Shopify Markets.

Payment methods per country

The table shows per country what you need at minimum and how to offer it as a Belgian or Dutch Shopify store. Checked in November 2026.

Belgium: Bancontact first

A Belgian store without Bancontact loses customers at checkout. In 2024 there were 382 million online Bancontact payments, 90% of them by smartphone (Bancontact, 2025). Via Shopify Payments, Bancontact costs a fixed EUR 0.39 per transaction, regardless of the order amount. Keep in mind the move from Payconiq to Wero, which has also worked online at ING, KBC and BNP Paribas Fortis since March 2026. Everything about activation and fees is in activating Bancontact on your Shopify store.

The Netherlands: iDEAL becomes Wero

iDEAL is the standard for paying online in the Netherlands: according to iDEAL itself about 70% of online payments and more than 1 billion transactions per year. The brand is moving step by step to Wero: first co-branded as iDEAL | Wero, with full migration planned by the end of 2027. Shopify Payments follows that transition. If you have a Belgian store, you first need to process 100 orders through Shopify Payments before you can activate iDEAL | Wero. Read the timeline in iDEAL and Wero on Shopify.

Dutch shoppers also often use buy now, pay later. Klarna is part of Shopify Payments, in3 and Riverty you add with the Mollie app. What that costs, you can read in Klarna and buy now, pay later on Shopify.

Germany: PayPal and invoice payment

According to the EHI Retail Institute, in 2025 28.7% of online revenue in Germany went through PayPal and 26.1% through invoice payment, followed by direct debit (14.4%) and cards (13.7%). Without PayPal it is hard to sell there. You cover invoice payment with Klarna, which in Shopify Payments has an option where the customer pays within 14 days after shipping and you get your money right away.

France and Luxembourg: cards first

French customers mainly pay online with their bank card. Most French cards carry Visa or Mastercard next to the Cartes Bancaires logo, so the customer can simply pay with them as a card. In Luxembourg, 95% of all transactions were cashless in 2024 (ECB, via ABBL 2025). Cards, wallets and PayPal are your basis there; Bancontact and Klarna are not shown to customers in Luxembourg.

How do you offer these methods on Shopify?

There are three routes. Combine them, but know what each route costs.

Local methods in Shopify Payments. Activate them in Settings > Payments. Since 30 May 2026, Belgian stores can also offer MobilePay, TWINT, BLIK and Przelewy24, and Dutch stores TWINT and Przelewy24. They are only shown to customers in the method's country, such as TWINT in Switzerland or BLIK in Poland.

PayPal as an additional method. No extra Shopify cost as long as Shopify Payments is your main provider.

A PSP app for the rest. The Mollie app adds EPS, Bizum, in3, Riverty and the KBC and Belfius payment buttons, among others. On those transactions you pay a Shopify fee of 0.2% to 2%, depending on your plan. Work out that extra cost before you decide.

Too many buttons in your checkout does not work either. With payment customization apps you can hide, rename or reorder payment methods on every plan, for example per country or order amount. How payment fees weigh in your total budget, you can read in our overview of what Shopify costs in 2026.

Which payment methods should I offer in my store? A decision tree

Selling internationally: more than payment methods

Payment methods are one part of selling across borders. Some methods only work in the local currency (TWINT in Swiss francs, MobilePay in Danish or Swedish kroner), Shopify Payments charges 2% for currency conversion, and Klarna only appears when the customer checks out with an email address. Language, prices, VAT and shipping matter at least as much. That is what our guide to selling internationally with Shopify is for.

What we learned in the Shopify Community

Klarna does not show for foreign customers. A UK store selling only in GBP saw Klarna for UK customers but not for customers from other Klarna countries. A merchant with a Danish and a Swedish store only saw Klarna in the Danish one. Both stayed unresolved. Check markets and currencies per country before you promise local methods. A different express button after switching to Germany. After choosing Germany in the country and currency selector, the product page showed PayPal instead of Shop Pay. Shopify confirms the button shown depends on market settings, device, browser and customer history. Source: Shopify Community, August 2025.

iDEAL moves to Wero. Merchants asked what the transition means for their store. According to the thread most payment providers migrate automatically; custom or older integrations may need logo and frontend changes. Also watch out for phishing emails abusing the transition.
